S: On back perch. Flew around to evade me for catch. Flew up and crashed into ceiling then went to high perch when placed in OF. Flew between perches to evade us, hit ceiling 2x more. Came to ground after 3rd time hitting the ceiling but then flew straight back up to high perch.

O: Weighed and moved to OF. Exercised a few lengths to assess initial flight and vision

A: Mentation and awareness greatly improved. Much more evasive of people. Seemed to see better, hit perches well other than times that crashed into ceiling. Flew straight to perches. Good lift. Flight a bit crooked, likely due to missing half of tail. Will hopefully be able to compensate with practice.

P: Weigh and start on live prey when arrives. Exercise daily. Monitor flight/use of tail. Continue to monitor vision

A: Hard to assess if patient was only moving away when almost touched due to head trauma or if it is a vision issue. Was able to land on perches just fine. Weight is up and body condition is healthy. Has been able to find most of the food that has been offered outside. Willing to try in large flight when available.

Meloxicam: 0.47 cc (1.5 mg/ml compounded) PO

A: Mentation still abnormal without apparent awareness of surroundings. Occular trauma seems to be resolving. OD should be functionally visual. OS likely has significantly limited vision. Lack of awareness is likely more related to head trauma than visual damage. Mentation seems to have plateaued inside, last option is to move outside and see if that helps improve mentation. Has still been getting chopped food, should be no reason that can't get whole food.

P: Discontinue meloxicam. Monitor movements around outdoor enclosure and ability to find food. Monitor mentation outside. Switch to 1/2 ch, 1/2 w food. If not eating, weigh and evaluate if should continue care in 4d. If eating, weigh and evaluate in 1 week.

O: Checked vitals. Collected blood from L/R medial metatarsals. Cleaned some dried blood from beak and picked out clotted blood from nares. Gave oral and IM meds. Retrieved 21g of scrap. Placed in regular cage on low heating pad and without oxygen support.

A: Patient's mentation showing some improvement as bird was more active in hand. Held head up for most of treatment but lost strength by end of treatment. Patient is still relatively depressed and will need to pay attention throughout the day to see how it fares off of oxygen support. PCV values appear to be WNL.

OD retinal tear around 5 o clock
Initial treatment: 0.46cc Meloxicam PO

A: Severe head trauma, has periods of obtundedness and alert moments. Mild ocular trauma but should be visual. Wounds in left ear with bleeding, blood in nares and mouth dried and not fresh.

P: Rx meloxicam, fluids, try off oxygen tomorrow. Still needs a more thorough exam when able. Collect blood tomorrow.
